    Materials:

- Size 4 100% Cotton Yarn in two colors, (I Love This Cotton Yarn 180 yards solid color, 153 yards variegated color)

- US H/ 5mm Crochet Hook

- Yarn Needle

- Scissors

Machine wash and tumble dry.  It will shrink slightly.

I prefer to have the solid color as Side 1 and the variegated color as Side 2

    Stitch Abbreviations & Techniques Used:

(ch) chain

(sl st) slip stitch

(hdc) half double crochet

  • (2)hdc = place 2 hdc in the same stitch
  • hdc(x) = Consecutive hdc.
    • example: 2 hdc, hdc4 = place 2 hdc in the first stitch, then in the next 4 stitches you will place 1 hdc in each stitch.

(st) stitch

(sts) stitches

*....* = repeat instructions that are in the *'s

Each round after round 1 starts with 2hdc.

  • To remember how many hdc(x) just think of the round number you are on and add it to the 2 stitches you did for the 2hdc.

         example: Round 6: *2hdchdc4.* 8 times. (48 sts)

    • means to place 2 half double crochets in the first stitch, then go to the next stitch 4 stitches and place 1 half double crochet in each stitch.  Then you will repeat this patter 8 times to give you 48 stitches all the way around.
    • You can tell you are round 6 because 2hdc + hdc4 = 6 stitches total

Pattern:

Side 1 (this will be the “inside” of the pot holder, so a solid is suggested.)

Decide how large you want your finished pot holder to be (size is estimated, so make sure you you measure before cutting your thread)

Make a
magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 2, 8 hdc in the magic ring. (8 sts)

Round 2: 2hdc in each stitch, 8 times. (16 sts)

Round 3: *2hdchdc.* Repeat 8 times. (24 sts)

Round 4: *2hdc, hdc2.* Repeat 8 times. (32 sts)

Round 5: *2hdc, hdc3.* Repeat 8 times. (40 sts)

Round 6: *2hdc, hdc4.* Repeat 8 times. (48 sts)

Round 7: *2hdc, hdc5.* Repeat 8 times. (56 sts)

Round 8: *2hdc, hdc6.* Repeat 8 times. (64 sts)

Round 9: *2hdc, hdc7.* Repeat 8 times. (72 sts)

Round 10: *2hdc, hdc8.* Repeat 8 times. (80 sts)

Round 11: *2hdc, hdc9.* Repeat 8 times. (88 sts)

Round 12: *2hdc, hdc10.* Repeat 8 times. (96 sts)

Round 13: *2hdc, hdc11.* Repeat 8 times. (104 sts)

Round 14: *2hdc, hdc12.* Repeat 8 times. (112 sts)

Round 15: *2hdc, hdc13.* Repeat 8 times. (120 sts)

Round 16: *2hdc, hdc14.* Repeat 8 times. (128 sts)

Round 17: *2hdc, hdc12.* Repeat 8 times. (136 sts)

Round 18: *2hdc, hdc13.* Repeat 8 times. (144 sts)

Round 19: *2hdc, hdc14.* Repeat 8 times. (152 sts)

Round 20: *2hdc, hdc14.* Repeat 8 times. (160 sts)
----------------------------------------------------------------
at the end of the last roundsl st into the first stitch of the round to join. Finish off and weave in ends.

Next round for side 1: (crochet in the front loop only for this round) You will use the 2nd yarn color (variegated) for this new round.  (picture shows what the back looks like)

Remember that round you are on is the number of total stitches you will do before repeating.
  • example: if your last round is Round 12: *2hdc, hdc10.* Repeat 8 times. (96 sts)
    • Then this next round is considered Round 13: *2hdc, hdc11.* But you will only repeat this 7 times because the first time you do it you are adding an extra stitch (ch1).  This allows you to establish a link to hdc into.  So the first part of the instructions will say: Ch 12hdc in the same stitch, hdc11.  *2hdc, hdc11.* Repeat 7 times (104 sts)

Join the second color to any stitch on the last round. Ch 1, 2hdc in the same stitch, hdc(x).  *2hdc, hdc(x).* Repeat 7 times. Join with a sl st to the first hdc of the round. Finish off and weave in ends. ((x) sts see round guide)

sl st into the first stitch of the round to join. Finish off and weave in ends.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Side 2 (using the 2nd color. This will be the “outside” of the pot holder, the side that looks like it wraps around, variegated yarn is suggested)

You will crochet the exact same way you did for Side 1 except you will do all rounds.
  • example: if your last round is Round 12: *2hdc, hdc10.* Repeat 8 times. (96 sts) which made you do the next round as Round 13.  Then for this side you will follow side 1 instructions all the way through Round 13: *2hdc, hdc11.* Repeat 8 times. (104 sts)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Attaching the two sides together:

Place the 2 sides together in the way you want it to look in the end.  I like Side 1 to have the back facing out so that there is a rim between colors and a more distinct spiral showing.  I like to have Side 2 right side facing out so you see the hdc stitches.

sl st through the inside loops of each pad.  Leave outside loops alone.

SC in the inside loops of each pad in each stitch.

sl st into the first stitch to join. Finish off and weave in ends.
